As I do, I'll explain how it works. A simple solution that I did not expect to work actually worked: I put the SSD into an external USB sata disk cradle, and plugged that into another Windows 8 machine. The SSD and its volume was recognized and I was able to copy all of the data off of it.
Well written and presented. My initial SSD with Win8.1 was set to Read-Only. I tried to shrink the C: partition to add a D: drive for data, but “shrink” only allowed to reduce about 1/2. However at this stage I wouldn’t bother with an old recovery image and instead clean install Windows 10 RS1 which will give you superior performance.
